Evaluation of corticosteroids in treatment of tuberculous meningitis.

چکیده
98 patients with tuberculous meningitis were studied with a view to assessing the value of steroids as an adjuvant to antitubercular drugs. The patients were divided into three groups irrespective of the clinical stage of the disease. One group received antitubercular drugs alone, the second oral prednisolone, and the third intrathecal steroids, in addition to the antitubercular drugs. There was no significant difference in the mortality rate in the different groups. Oral steroid treatment lowered the CSF protein more rapidly, but did not influence the outcome nor prevent the formation of spinal block.

EVALUATION OF DIRECT MICROSCOPY, CULTURE, AND POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF TUBERCULOUS MENINGITIS
In view of the importance of early diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM), the efficiency of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), one of the most reliable and sensitive DNA-based assays, was compared with conventional methods (acid-fast microscopy and culture) for the detection of M. tuberculosis in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from patients suspected of TBM. Of the 29 CSF specim...

Background and Aim: Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis is difficult because of its non-specific clinical presentations which may be confused with other disorders of central nervous system. The initiation of anti-TB medication can often be delayed because of lack of available laboratory tests. This study was aimed at evaluating the adenosine deaminase (ADA) concentration in differentiating tube...
متن کاملTuberculous meningitis: successful use of delayed corticosteroids in treatment and polymerase chain reaction in diagnosis.
The diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis remains an enigma despite recent technologic advances, such as computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and more recently, polymerase chain reaction of the cerebrospinal fluid. We report a patient with tuberculous meningitis who, when treated with appropriate antitubercular medications, made no progress in her recovery. Approximatel...

From 1986-1989, sixteen patients suffering from TB meningitis aged 12-58, with CSF smear or culture positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis were hospitalized and treated with rifampin (RIF) , isoniazid (INH) , pyrazinamide (PZA) and ethambutol (ETB) for nine months. In all patients, ETB and PZA were withdrawn after three months and INH and RIF were continued for the next six months. 81.2 p...
